9 things I do not want to give up in 2019

My good, good work friend and fellow CT blogger Jamie Taylor (jamieeverafter dot com) inspired me to write this blog today when she recently posted about the things she was not willing to give up in the year 2019.   I “liked” her Insta post because this kind of thinking is the polar opposite of what you expect to hear from anyone in the early days of a New Year 😄.

At any rate, it got me thinking about my own will not give up list for 2019 so here  is that list (in no particular order):

Coffee

I cannot leave the house without my coffee – nothing fancy, just a dark roast, completely black with natural sugar does the trick – I tried leaving the house without coffee once and it wasn’t pretty – I seriously thought I was coming down with something 😀

Edge Strong workouts

I cannot imagine doing what I do for a living without the benefits of a good workout each weekday morning.  It is not only a stress reliever but it also keeps me physically fit:   LJ: Stronger than before…

Social Media

Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, Yelp, you name it – I’m on it and loving every minute of it 😀   R U Social?

Pampering (hair/feet/nails)

It’s no secret that I have a weekly standing hair appointment at the salon every Saturday morning so getting my nails and/or feet done on a monthly basis is par for the course:    Put your slippers on…

Wine

I make my living as a TV/Digital/Social Media Account Executive in a highly competitive, pressure-cooker work environment.  I do this all on 100 percent commission so a nice glass (or two) of red wine is more than welcome on the weekends 😀    10 things I cannot live without today

Movies

As I’ve posted about before in TVFL, Growing up Hollis my mother Jean would take her 7 children to the movies on Saturdays armed with candy and snacks:    Movie Buff   To this day watching movies on TV, Mobile tablets or even at the theater is a regular pastime.

Salad (with protein)

I loooooove salad any time of the year – not just the Summertime and I pile my salad with some or all of the following ingredients: romaine lettuce, fresh veggies, mixed nuts, cheddar cheese, hard boiled eggs, sesame seeds, chick peas, grilled chicken, homemade croutons and low fat dressing.   The low fat dressing is a semi-joke considering what goes into building my salads 😀    New Haven, CT Fall(ish) eats!

Golf

I finally learned how to play Golf last Summer at Lyman Orchards Golf Center in Golf Fore Women 101 and I must say I’m truly looking forward to the Summer again so I can hit the links with my newfound lady golf friends!   Ready Fore Golf

Beauty Sleep

Over the years I have alternatively read or heard that a good night’s sleep is overrated and you really don’t need that much rest for your body to function at it’s best.  I disagree.  When I get at least 7 hours of sleep at night I tend to be more mentally alert and better able to handle multiple tasks at hand the following day.    What it means to be a woman of a certain age…

So that’s my list for 2019, what’s your’s?!?

That’s it for now.  So remember, there are plenty of fun things to do in Connecticut and some are even low cost or free so enjoy!

Sushi Girl

Whether I am travelling to a new city or town, or just socializing in or around Greater New Haven, anyone who knows me knows I love me some sushi!  And It doesn’t take long to get me in a “sushi mood” where I like to check out a new sushi restaurant.   However, an old fave will get me every time (smile).

What I enjoy with my sushi is one or more of the following:

  • edamame with sea salt
  • miso soup
  • iceberg lettuce salad with ginger dressing
  • super hot green tea

And usually when I crave sushi it involves a date of some sort.  Whether it’s me and my S.O., me and a client, me and one of my relatives, me and one of my good friends or me and a co-worker, a sushi day usually turns into a good sleeping night (smile).

So here are the sushi restaurants I have eaten in once, twice and some even more than three times.  These are my faves, not necessarily everyone else’s faves…

For all-you-can-eat, I like Sushi Palace in Orange, CT.  The sushi and sashimi is always fresh so it never tastes like it’s been sitting out all day…

Sushi Palace, Orange, CT

For specialty rolls, I prefer Dozo Asian Bistro and Sushi in the Westville section of New Haven, CT.   The sushi looks as appetizing as it tastes plus it’s big, juicy and delish!

Dozo Asian Bistro & Sushi, Westville, CT

For those exotic looking specialty rolls, I like to go to Pink Basil in Mystic, CT.  They never disappoint and the outdoor seating in the Summer is a big plus.

Pink Basil, Olde Mistick Village, Mystic, CT

Although pricey, the sushi rolls at the Summer Shack in the Mohegan Sun Casino are to die for.

Me and my S.O. spend alot of time in Lewes, DE, especially as the weather gets warmer.   Last Summer we went to The Cultured Pearl in nearby Rehoboth Beach for the most delicious and colorful sushi in town.  It’s expensive though, especially during “the Season.”

The Cultured Pearl, Rehoboth Beach,  Delaware

When my niece Dimitrica was traveling from North Carolina to Massachusetts for business last year, she stopped in Connecticut to visit me.  She too is a fan of sushi so I couldn’t help but treat her to one of my local faves:   Tokyo Sushi II in North Haven, CT.   The interior may look like a pizza parlor but the sushi is out-of-this-world good!!!

Tokyo Sushi II, North Haven, CT

Social media is a great avenue for a new restaurant to post food pics and I must admit that Soga Sushi’s awesome food pics on FB got me there!   It’s located right in North Haven, CT so me and my S.O. stopped in last weekend after a long day of running errands.   The sushi did not disappoint and the complimentary tasty orange slices afterwards were a nice touch (smile).

Soga Sushi, North Haven, CT

Me and my S.O. recently went to see Office Hour at the Long Wharf Theater and afterwards headed to one of my super faves:  Kumo New Haven where the sushi is always fresh, always good!

Kumo Sushi Hibachi, New Haven, CT

Me and my S.O. love to go to the movies any time of the year so we headed over to Iron Chef after a Saturday matinee at Holiday Stadium 10 Cinemas in Wallingford, CT.   This restaurant was well recommended by a “sushi friend” and it truly was delish!

Iron Chef, Wallingford, CT

It’s no secret that Olde Mistick Village is one of my favorite shopping destinations in Southeastern Connecticut so when I’m down that way, Go Fish is one of my two fave sushi restaurant Go-To’s…

Go Fish, Olde Mistick Village, Mystic, CT

So whether you are stuck on Sushi like me, or just craving something uniqely different for lunch or dinner, Japanese is the way to go!

Connecticut “Summatime” Eats!

I love Connecticut in the Summertime because the weather is hazy, hot and humid and there’s soooooo much to do!  These ‘tropical vacation-like’ weather conditions draw folks outside so the possibilities on who to do what with are endless?.

And because it’s soooooo hot, one of my favorite pastimes in the Summer is eating out, especially at new restaurants.  But an old fave will get me every time (smile).

I have to be careful though with what and where I choose to eat because of my history of Colon Cancer.  So I take my time by going online beforehand to look over menus to see if they have “healthy,” “light,” or “low-fat” entrees.   This way I can pick and choose from foods that are not processed or fried and that contain as few ingredients as possible.   I won’t lie, sometimes this is easy to do and other times it presents a challenge…

Here are just a few of my go-to’s.  The actual list is real long so rest assured there will be a Part II and III of this blog post…

For breakfast on the weekends I love Julia’s Bakery in Orange.  The last time I was there I had a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on a homemade whole wheat english muffin.  All of their breads are made fresh daily and as a result, absolutely delicious!  I washed my breakfast sandwich down with an Iced Coffee.  Yummy!

For my need-to-be-clean, super healthy days,  I like B Natural in New Haven, a Shops at Yale restaurant.  Especially the healthy juice from their Juice Bar. Here I had the All Natural Turkey Wrap with a Detox Juice.  Delish!

When I’m out looking for lip-smacking, finger-licking good ribs on my not-so-clean days (smile) I make my way over to the Science Park neighborhood in New Haven to Ricky’s Rib Shack!  The ribs and sides are to die for!   The background music is not too shabby either (smile).

For New Haven pizza, I’m stuck on Ah-Beetz on Temple Street.  I call it ‘Chipotle meets Modern’ because you truly walk the line to create your own thin-crusted 11 inch customized personal pie and healthy salad and then, when it’s finished, the servers bring it out to your table.  I named my customized personal ‘meatless’ pie LJ’s Vegetarian Delight, as I topped it with all the healthy stuff.

I love downtown eateries in the Summer, especially when they have a cute little shaded courtyard patio for dining in the rear.  Zoi’s on Orange Street in New Haven is a new fave that I recently discovered by way of my client, Mary Wade.  We ‘ladies who lunch,’ including Laura Hutchinson of News 8, all enjoyed our hearty delicious salads on this super hot sunny day!

When I’m in the mood for Northern Italian, I love me some Gusto Trattoria on the Post Road in Milford.  They have this gluten-free pasta dish which fills you up without filling you out.  And their warm homemade oblong garlic bread, which you spread with garlic butter and dip in olive oil, is heavenly!   Mangia!

Speaking of Italian cuisine, I love love love live theater and one of my favorite venues is the Waterbury Palace Theater.  Waterbury has lots of good Italian restaurants and one of my new faves is Damelio’s Italian Eatery.  It’s neighborhood location and outdoor dining on the patio make it a fun place for me and my client, Sheree Marcucci to eat.  They are known for their pasta,  anti-pasta and more.  I bucked the trend though and had this baked fish dish and it hit the spot!

For Italian cuisine in New Haven I like head to the Upper State Street neighborhood to Portofino’s for lunch or dinner – their salmon and spinach is always a good, healthy choice!

And the old standby, Tre Scalini in the Wooster Street neighborhood of New Haven will have you coming back for more!  This salmon over ceaser salad dish with homemade croutons was the bomb!

Just across the street from one of my favorite live entertainment venues in New Haven, the legendary Shubert Theater on College Street,  sits  Elm City Social, a new fave because of the unique decor and the delicious New American cuisine.   After eating this Kale Caeser with Chicken dish,  I (almost) licked my plate clean (smile).

A Shops at Yale restaurant, Heirloom, sits inside The Study at Yale and is open for breakfast,  lunch and dinner.  We went there for lunch and I enjoyed an Heirloom Veggie Burger with a side salad.  They are known for their Farm, Coastal Cooking.  Healthy!!

And just last week I dined at Atelier Florian on Upper Chapel Street in the Chapel West Neighborhood in New Haven with my dear friend and Wine Connoisseur,  Janna Waite.  The General Manager of the restaurant, Alexandria Pena, convinced me that I would be in for a real treat.  She was right.  I loved the classy ambience along with the attentive service and the delightful Belgian cuisine.  We both ordered a half dozen Blue Point oysters before our meal. And then we settled on the same entree: Faroe Island Salmon with Tender Leeks,  Haricot  Verts and Mashed Potatoes, which just about melted in my mouth.  The French wine Janna picked out that night was well suited for our meal. And the dessert, which Alexandria insisted we try, was too good to pass up, warm blueberry cobbler with french vanilla ice cream and whipped cream – Super Yum!!!

I had the pleasure of dining out at Prime One Eleven in Trumbull over a month ago because my gf Lola invited me and my S.O. James, along with 5 other couples, to a milestone birthday dinner party for her hubby Darryl.  I enjoyed it there so much that when me and my “squad” were looking for a restaurant in Fairfield County to celebrate a belated birthday, I recommended it.  It’s a relatively new, upscale eatery that’s fun to be in, has really good food, good drinks and very attentive servers.  My “Composition” (Entree) that night was the Organic 1/2 Chicken with Roasted Garlic Whipped Potatoes and Wood Fired Asparagus.  Delish!

And finally,  if you’re looking for a fun date night alone or with other couples which involves packing your own picnic basket and purchasing one of their 5 wines, Gouviea Winery and Vineyard in Wallingford is always a good choice.  It’s local for me and my S.O. and the picturesque vineyard presents many photo ops.  Bon Appetit!
