Divas in the desert!

There are soooooo many reasons why I love love love Las Vegas and as what usually happens with me, I discover something good later on in life.  Why it took me 50+ years to discover Las Vegas though is beyond me.   I’ve had ample opportunities over the years to go and now that I’ve been (twice already this year alone!)  I can’t wait to go back (smile).

Again, the first time I ever went was this year (2016) in April with my man James.   We stayed in a condominium off the ‘Strip.’   The experience, although fun and exciting, was not the same.  The ‘Strip’ was a place we visited via Uber and Lyft, both the preferred (and most cost efficient) taxi alternatives.  However, because I was visiting the ‘Strip,’ I didn’t feel as strongly attracted to it until I came back in October of that same year where we (me and my girl squad) actually booked a hotel on the ‘Strip.’

We booked a Fun Girls Getaway Weekend with my client Charlene of Clear Vision Productions in Hamden, CT.  The agent who worked with her on it was Karen Quinn-Panzer of Dream Vacations.

The Fun Girls Getaway Weekend was originally scheduled for Friday, October 7th through Sunday, October 9th but we all upgraded our hotel room to stay one extra night –  Monday, October 10th (4 days/3 nights).

Here’s what our Fun Girls Getaway Weekend included:

A hotel stay at the Flamingo Las Vegas.  This hotel (the oldest Las Vegas hotel on the Strip) is smack dab in the middle of all the action.  Most of the other hotels with their themed casinos are within walking distance as this is truly a walkable city.  The rooms we stayed in on the 9th floor were simple and clean but with no view and sparse amenities.  The stylish modern rooms they boasted about on the flyer are situated on the upper floors where the remodel has taken place.  I’m not complaining because outside of putting away our clothes, showering, and crashing for a few hours, our rooms were nothing more than our base…

Our room at The Flamingo was simple and clean – perfect for our busy weekend

Flamingo Las Vegas in its entirety is stunning as it has:

  • The 16 acre ‘Go’ Pool
  • The Mall Shops
  • The Health Spa
  • The Caribbean themed Casino
  • The Restaurants
  • The Bars
  • The Wildlife Habitat

We could easily have spent our entire weekend there as it seemed to have everything but the streets were beckoning (smile).  We even ran into the “doctor” from Grey’s Anatomy (actor Jason Winston George) in the hotel lobby  who was even more handsome in person (smile).

Our first night (Friday at 6pm) we had our ‘Welcome Champagne Tour of the Las Vegas Strip‘ transported via a “Presidential” stretch limo.

Our very own stretch limo complete with alcoholic beverages

Me and my girls in the limo sipping on our welcome drinks (smile)

We ended our tour at the famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign to take pictures under it with the photographer on duty.  It was awesome!

Later on that same evening we had  VIP seats (practically front row, center) to Frank Marino’s Diva Show (a cast of celebrity female impersonators) at The Linq Theater, literally across the street from the Flamingo.  I must admit I had never heard of Frank Marino before that night, but when he came out in his Joan Rivers get up I immediately knew who he was.  He was, and still is, a hoot and his Celebrity Look-a-Like Divas:  Whitney Houston, Madonna, Pink, Lady Gaga, Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Liza Minnelli, just to name a few, are all true pros and simply spectacular!

We were on our own for food all weekend long so we ate at a variety of restaurants though most of them were located at the Flamingo (our fave was a $22.95 lunch/dinner buffet at Garden Paradise that included bottomless Mimosas and/or Bloody Mary’s!)

Oh, I forgot, I met another celebrity (a canine actress and model out of Beverly Hills, CA) while walking through the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat (shown below) the very next day on my way to the 15 acre ‘Go’ Pool.

Her name is Miss Coco Puff and she’s a Chi-Weenie (part Chihuahua, part dachshund) so she had me at Hello (smile).  Her owner gave me her calling card so we are now friends on Instagram (double smile).

Miss CoCo Puffs herself – looking fierce (smile)

Speaking of the Flamingo ‘Go’ Pool, this could have been one of my favorite places to hang out, but because we were in Vegas (the City that never sleeps) hanging out was not part of our weekend plan.  Our goal was to visit as many casinos, shops, tourist attractions, etc.  so the ‘Go’ Pool on Saturday was merely a pit stop for us 50-something weekend adventure seekers (smile).

So our next adventure on Saturday was a ride on the High Roller at the Linq Hotel and Casino. This spaceship-looking ride reminded me of The Jetsons, a TV show I used to love watching in the 70’s.  After standing in line for a short while, all 4 of us got into this big bubble then sat down to watch and listen to a computer-generated young man on a screen above us as we slowly ascended 550 feet up into the sky…

High Roller

The whole trip (to and fro) took all of 30 minutes, but the experience was unbelievable and the aerial views were breathtaking.

By the way, there are a ton of nightclubs at the hotels for each and every taste. There’s Hyde at Bellagio, Drai’s at Cromwell, Marquee at Cosmopolitan, Foxtail at SLS, Tao at Venetian, Intrigue at Wynn, Omnia at Caesars Palace, Hakkasan at MGM Grand and XS at Encore.  Most of them open at 10pm and close at 3am, 4am or 5am. Some of them offer free admission and/or free or reduced drinks for the ladies. Unfortunately we did not get to take advantage of our VIP Club Pass with VIP Entrance (it was included in our weekend package – free access to 8 nightclubs!) as we just did not have the time or the energy in our 3 night, 4 day stay.

Bright Lights, Big City vibe

P.S. Here’s a huge time and money saver tip – If you are visiting Las Vegas for the first time, do yourself a favor and book a professional tour as there is so much to see and do and you can easily get overwhelmed by all of the choices.  We spent $62 for a 3 hour bus tour on Sunday night called The Las Vegas Night Lights Tour and it was truly money well spent!

We met up at Bally’s – there were about 19 of us in all – and according to our tour guide, we were one of the most diverse bus tour groups she ever had (smile).  Our tour was fantastic – Renee, our tour guide, taught us a lot about the history of Las Vegas in the most engaging way, and since it was a stop and start tour, our first stop was to see the volcanic Fire Show at the Bellagio – afterwards I felt as if my face were melting!

We then cooled off at the grand Water Show at The Mirage…

And we couldn’t leave our Las Vegas Night Lights Tour without actually seeing (from our tour bus windows) all of the colorful and beautiful lights at night in ‘Old Vegas’ and then getting off the bus to actually go in and see the ‘Old Vegas’ casinos (reminiscent of the movie, Casino).  Renee, our tour guide, told us that this is the section of town to ‘do Vegas’ if you are looking for cheap eats, reasonably priced hotels and dollar tables!   Plus, it included my favorite part of ‘Old Vegas,’ The Fremont Street Experience – the pedestrian mall and attraction where I believe the phrase, ‘What Happens in Vegas…” came from (smile).

This woman was not happy when she realized I was taking her picture!

What happens in Vegas…

Lastly, and Reason Number 42 on why I love love love Las Vegas: there’s always something different to see or do…and apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way.  Our tour guide Renee told us that Vegas typically has 42.5 million visitors a year but this year they were projecting a record 45 million visitors!  45 million!  Wow!!  It’s no wonder Vegas remains one of the top travel destinations in the country!

I felt like I was part of a movie scene in this photo op at the Mall (smile)

Enjoy!!!

My VDay BDay

I was born in a blizzard on Valentine’s Day in 1962.  While growing up my mother always told me it was the worst blizzard Newport Rhode Island had ever seen..so I literally just now looked it up.  The closest news item I could find was from WPRI-TV 12 which reported that the year 1962 had the snowiest winter on record with 30.1 inches…so  yeah, I’m officially a ‘blizzard baby.’

Having a birthday on Valentine’s Day is a double-edged sword.  But when I was little girl growing up in Groton, CT, it was not that big of a deal.  Here’s why:

We Hollis kids always had our birthday celebrations on the closest Saturday to our birth date.  My sister Casandra’s birthday fell on the 24th of February so we would celebrate both of our birthdays on one of the Saturdays in between both of our dates.  My parents had 7 children so this was the most efficient and effective way to celebrate. So consequently I never really focused on the actual day or date, just the month of February, and I was fine with that.  After dinner (where our mother would cook our favorite meal!) me and Casandra  would also have our own individual cakes and ice cream.  My cake was vanilla with red frosting (courtesy of food coloring!)  I usually had vanilla ice cream.  Casandra’s cake was strawberry with pink frosting and strawberry ice cream.  We would blow out our candles, eat our cake and ice cream, unwrap the  gifts and spend the rest of the night playing with our new gifts.   I always felt extra special though because each and every year of my actual birth date, until I was 18, my mother would give me a small, heart-shaped box of chocolates.  My mother is no longer alive so I still get tears in my eyes when I see a heart-shaped box of chocolates on my birthday…

Here is a picture of me (in blue with the cute little birthday hat) and my sister Casandra (Standing with balloon in hand) celebrating our 4th and 8th birthdays with my older brother Michael (seated behind me) and my younger brother Shawn (with frosting on his face) (smile).

Shawn with the frosting, Casandra with the blue balloon, me with the birthday hat and Michael trying to be seen (smile)

At Mary Morrison Elementary School in Groton, CT, Valentine’s Day was not just my birthday, it was an event.

We were asked by our home room teacher to purchase enough Valentine’s Day cards to hand out to each and every one of our classmates.  This would ensure that nobody was left out on this holiday celebrating love.  Me and my classmates got around this by handing out the bigger Valentines to our faves!

Nowadays Valentine’s Day has morphed into such a massive Hallmark holiday that I feel as if my birthday pales in comparison (smile).    Also it feels waaaaaay too commercial to me.  You can’t walk or drive anywhere in the month of February, in advance of the holiday, without being bombarded with big mylar balloons, chocolates, candies, roses,  greeting cards, jewelry store specials, restaurant dinner specials, retail gift items, etc.  You would truly have to live under a rock to not know that February 14th is Valentine’s Day (smile).

As an adult I have so gotten used to the usual remarks concerning my birthday from: ‘Oh, you’re so lucky, you get 2 gifts, right?’  to:  Oh, you’re not lucky at all!  Your gifts are probably rolled into one…’

No matter, I celebrate in my own way.  For instance every year me and my girls (Gina, Thais, Sherry) celebrate our respective birthdays together over dinner (usually Japanese cuisine for mine) the night of, or closest Saturday night to, the birth date.  We’ve been doing this for over 20 years and we are all in our 50’s now so it’s always a good time.

Me and my partner James have had some memorable Vday/Bday celebrations together – most recently was in the Dominican Republic when we (with a bunch of other travelling vacationers) were on a catamaran party boat on our way to a day trip on the private island of Salinas…that was special…here we are in New Haven, CT at one of my favs, Cast Iron Steakhouse and Oyster Bar

My VDay Bday with my boo

And I always make a point of taking my birthday off from work every year as this day is much too special to me to spend it working…Besides, I’d much rather pamper myself that day (hair/nails/feet/facial/back massage), etc.

I’m turning 54 this year and my upcoming  BDay/VDay falls on a Sunday so I have not yet decided if I will take that next day (Monday) off…we shall see.

So happy Valentine’s Day everyone!  And let’s make this year more about the presence and less about the presents...

Sincerely,

The Yellow Brick Road

So me and my sisters, Dana and Casandra, were texting one lazy Saturday afternoon and came up with this great idea. We were talking about how in the past year I did:

a magazine interview:

(pgs 40-41: http://issuu.com/secondwind/docs/nhm_oct_2014-web2e=4001684/9891267)

a radio interview:

(see parts 1 and 2 of podcasts dated 8/15/15: http://www.943wybc.com/Episodes.aspx?PID=2770)

and a television interview:

Two of the three interviews centered around my colon cancer experience. Then my sister Dana said, let’s put together a colon cancer fundraiser in my (Lajeune’s) name and we all agreed it should involve water, a good time and people. We immediately thought: why not a fundraiser cruise!  Here is where the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ concept kicked in: Dana is a part-time travel consultant so everything involving the cruise travel plans would come out of her agency – Cruise Planners; my sister Casandra is a part-time Quilt Artist so she would create 2 colon cancer survival quilts to raffle off; and I am a colon cancer survivor with a real wish to help others, so Voila, the Lajeune Hollis Cancer Survivors Cruise was born!  We decided on the month of June in 2016, since June is Cancer Survivor’s Month.  We thought it would be nice if everyone wore white on the last night of the cruise which would represent Survivorship and Life.  And we imagined a Carnival Sunshine Cruise to Canada/New England out of NYC made the most sense as it’s an affordable, good time that is popular with our target demographic, middle-aged adults.   By the way, the interior cabins start at just $569…

We leave out of NYC June 30th – July 4th so there is no airfare involved. We are adding $50 to each cabin, which will go directly to CCCF, who “has been working since 2003 to fund screening programs for the uninsured and provide much-needed funds to young investigators who are committed to finding a cure for colorectal cancer.”  Dana initially contacted the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation (CCCF) and sent them my colon cancer survival story blog.  She suggested that I call them myself and share my story.  I spoke on the phone with their Director of Communications (Cindy) and explained my story. After I finished Cindy confided in me that the timing couldn’t have been better as one of the main priorities at CCCF this year concerned the African-American Community who are dying of Colon Cancer (one of the most preventable cancers!) quicker than any other ethnic group!  Cindy explained that this is happening because African-Americans are not going to see their doctors on a regular basis so when they do finally come in, the diagnosis is much more worse than it would have been. I agreed to allow her to post my colon cancer survival blog in their CCCF Fall newsletter and she asked to be kept in the loop on our upcoming Colon Cancer Cruise so she could get us additional publicity by including it in their newsletter!  Cindy also mentioned that she would be more than happy to provide us with information on early detection for colon cancer which we could hand out on the cruise.  Stay tuned as me and my sisters are happily skipping down the Yellow Brick Road as we speak!

Sincerely,

Yikes! Has it really been 35 years since high school?!??

imageI feel like pinching myself because tonight I am going to my 35th High School Reunion!  I still can’t believe it because I remember my mother mentioning her 35th High School reunion to me when I was a child and me thinking how old everyone there would be!  Now I know better…we are all 53 but I must say that I truly believe that 50 is the new 40 in terms of health and well-being.

Here’s a picture of us when we were still in high school:

image

I’m looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and getting contact information from those I have completely lost touch with.  I’ve attended my 5th, 10th and 15th high school reunions so this is not completely new to me.  We did not have a 20th and I inadvertently missed the 25th.  There was not a 30th either so this will be the first time I have seen my classmates since I was 33!  20 years ago – unbelievable, as time has truly flown by.

The event takes place at the Groton Elks Lodge on Shennecossett Road in Groton. There will be a relaxing sit down BBQ Chicken dinner, cash bar, late night pizza, dancing and music by Next Level Entertainment featuring 80s music since we graduated in 1980.  Looking forward to a good time!

Me and Linda Cady – my February bday twin!

A keepsake and it was good!

Our delicious keepsake which I ate!  Ooops!  As you can see, I had a very good time and was so glad that I went.

An Apple a day…

Two mornings ago my Apple iPhone died and I could not revive it.  I pressed and pressed and pressed the on/off button on top of it for super looooooong periods of time but it would not come back to me.  I was devastated.  I started “jones-ing,”  getting all twitchy and stuff and feeling like I was disconnected from the world.  Even though I still had my iPad, it just wasn’t the same as I could not make phone calls from my iPad…the funny thing is that I seldom use the phone on my iPhone, opting instead to send emails and texts as it’s more convenient.  Nevertheless, the first place I went that morning was the Apple Retail Store in New Haven, CT.  I arrived at about 830am and could immediately see through the glass doors that only one person, a staff worker, was inside.  I looked at her, she looked at me, I looked at her again and she pointed to the sign on the door which posted their hours.  They did not open the doors until 10am.  Can you imagine!  Unbelievable!  But then I remembered that they held some of their training sessions between 8am and 10am (I actually attended a training session there once along with my News 8 sales teammates and sales managers).

Apple store

At any rate I was still highly annoyed so I decided I would just go in to work and not come back there until lunch time.  Work provided me with some relief as I have my laptop computer, my iPad Air and my land line just in case anyone needed to get in touch with me…

techies

The morning flew by and at lunch time I drove back to the Apple Retail Store, dead phone in tow.  As luck would have it, I walked in and did not see the usual throng of folks in line, waiting to be assigned by the ‘concierge”  to an Apple Retail Specialist. There was only one lady in front of me and she was clearly annoyed.  Apparently she had gotten to the store over an hour ago (without an appointment) and was told to come back in an hour and she would be seen.  So when she came back, the concierge told her that there were now  just 7 people in front of her waiting to be helped!  By the way, making an appointment online is crucial before going to the Apple Retail Store if you have a major problem.  I had a feeling my phone problem was not major.  I explained to the concierge how my phone had died and could not be revived and he immediately pressed his finger on the top button and Voila– the apple logo came up!   I gave him a big hug (psyche!) actually I thanked him and left the store with a huuuuuge grin on my face.  My iPhone was back and I was, once again, back in business!

Sincerely,
